Worked on this pillow kit from Edyta Sitar’s Laundry Basket quilts over the last week and it was a wonderful introduction to English paper piecing. I really appreciated the convenience of having the fabric cut out for me. I made a few mistakes in the layout, but it doesn’t really matter in the end. The kit doesn’t include the pattern […]

Kaffe Fassett Hexies — COVID quilt #3
Covid quilt finish #3 -lap size. Kaffe Fassett lipstick layer cake combined with solids. Used Missouri Star Quilt Company large hexie ruler – very easy construction. Quilted on my new Janome 6650 – just straight lines echoing the hexagonal shape of each block.
Seaglass Art Quilt
I finished this lovely art quilt — it’s Exhausted Octopus‘s Sea Glass quilt method! I did an online workshop on the technique and this was my first result!
More orange peel blocks
I’ve been making a few of these blocks every time I sew, and it’s so much fun! I try to keep all the peels connected through colour and mix up the background prints. I think I’ll try one block with pale peels against black prints!
Playing with orange peels
Trying out my new sewing machine (Janome MC6650!) and wanted to play with machine quilting fusible collage elements. I love the shape of orange peels, so combined colourful appliqués with warm monochrome backgrounds in scrappy four patches. I added the central circle to tie the blocks together. I used the free orange peel template at Charming Peels at Moda– the […]
My first disappearing nine patch
I’ve got a quilt planned around a group of Fat Quarters from Lewis and Irene — Water Meadow — which I had been looking longingly at while browsing our LQS, The Woolworks (run by textile artist Heidi Wulfraat). It reminds me of the work of my husband’s cousin’s wife, Yorkshire artist Helen Gaunt. I’m going to make an appliqué panel for […]
New Sewing Machine!!!!
After half a year quilting on my tiny but gallant Kenmore (6.5″ throat!) I got myself an early birthday present 🙂 It’s a brand new Janome Memory Craft 6650 and it’s taking some getting used to — it’s amazing how much an extension of ourselves our sewing machine becomes. This new machine has my entire wish list of quilting machine […]
Fabric choices, Thousand Oaks Quilt
NB: Edyta Sitar’s Thousand Oaks quilt pattern is available on her website or in her book, Patches of Blue. I’m a collage artist and I found choosing the fabrics for this appliqué project almost exactly like composing the materials for a paper or multi media collage. You need 9 fat quarters worth of fabrics for the appliqués. From each fabric […]
Thousand Oaks Quilt – some background
My current active project is Edyta Sitar’s Thousand Oaks Quilt (you can find the pattern on her website and in her book, Patches of Blue). Sitar has based her design on the very old appliqué block often called Oak Leaf and Reel, which has a history in the United States dating back at least to the 1830s. Barbara Brackman has […]
Working on Thousand Oaks quilt by Edyta Sitar
I bought Edyta Sitar’s book Patches of Blue which arrived a few days ago, and I’ve been working on this appliqué pattern. I’ll post more details next week , but I just wanted to share a photo of my first blocks!
