I wanted to make a quilt with this panel for friends who have two huskies and live in the moderately far north of Ontario, but was really unsure how to make it into a quilt.

I used a jelly roll of solids and then augmented it with 3 browns, black, white and grey and varied the width of those strips so the strips weren’t all 2.5″ wide .

The sashing strips are 2″ unfinished.

I divided the width of the panel so that I had three columns of piecing with two sashing strips at top and bottom. Worked out almost perfectly to 7 inch finished rows of pieced strips (7.5 unfinished). Then I just used that measurement as my standard for the columns at the side.

It went together surprisingly well!

Then I quilted the strips with some straight lines and did free motion quilting on the panel, to bring out the details of the picture!
